UN Sierra Leone (UNOMSIL) Full Size Medal
The UNOMSIL mission in Sierra Leone was to promote stability and security by disarming and demobilizing former combatants and provide assistance by deploying a limited number of unarmed military observers.
Each United Nations medal is identical in design, with a unique ribbon to identify the specific mission. The UNOMSIL medal ribbon is a central strip of UN blue, flanked by equal stripes of pale green, white and blue, the colours of Sierra Leone. The green represents agriculture and the mountains, the white represents unity and justice, and the blue represents its unique natural harbour at Freetown and the aspiration to contribute to world peace.
Qualifying time for the medal is 90 days of service in the Mission. Subsequent tours of the same regions would be denoted with a numeral attached to the ribbon.
United Nations medals are not engraved.
All official medals are sent loose on the ribbon unless medal mounting is also purchased on the same order.
