UN Namibia (UNTAG) Miniature Medal
UNTAG was established to ensure the early independence of Namibia through free and fair elections under the supervision and control of the United Nations. The Mission was established April 1989 with a mandate for one year and finally closed in March 1990.
Each United Nations medal is identical in design, with a unique ribbon to identify the specific mission. The centre of the UNTAG ribbon contains five equal stripes in black, yellow, red, green and royal blue, the colours of the five Olympic Rings and representing the five continental regions of the world, all of which were represented in either the military or civilian police components of UNTAG. The centre is flanked by equal bars of a sand colour to represent the Kalahari and Namibian deserts with equal bands of UN blue appearing at each end.
Qualifying time for the medal is 90 days of service in the Mission. Subsequent tours of the same regions would be denoted with a numeral attached to the ribbon.
All official medals are sent loose on the ribbon unless medal mounting is also purchased on the same order.
Please Note - the medal ribbon on the obverse of the medal is pictured the wrong way around, of the central stripes the order should be (from left to right) black, yellow, red, green and blue. We hope to get this image corrected soon.
