South Atlantic Full Size Medal
The South Atlantic Medal is a British campaign medal awarded to British military personnel and civilians for service in the Falklands War of 1982. This medal was awarded to those who took part in the liberation of South Georgia and the Falkland Islands after the Argentine invasion in April 1982; with the Argentine surrender on the14th June 1982. Those who served on the islands up to 21st October 1982 to complete the airfield at Mount Pleasant are also eligible for the medal.
The obverse of this medal has the crowned profile of Queen Elizabeth II, and around the top edge on the reverse are the words 'SOUTH ATLANTIC MEDAL' and a laural wreath around the bottom edge competing a circle around the arms of the Falklands in the centre. The arms of the Falkland Islands is a shield with a ram at the top and a ship on the bottom and below the shield is a scroll which states 'Desire the Right'. The ribbon is blue on the edges, sea green in the centre and has white inbetween with the colours blending into each other symbolising the Atlantic Ocean. The ribbon is a standard width of 32mm wide.
Qualifying time for the medal is 30 days continuous or accumulated service in the operational zone including Ascension Island. Members of the Merchant Navy and some civilians including journalists were also eligible for the medal.
