South Africa 1877-79 Full Size Medal
The South Africa Medal was awarded for participation in various campaigns between 1877 and 1879, including operations against the Galeka and Gaika tribes, Tambookies and Zulu's. The most famous battles acknowledged by this medal are the defence of Rorkes Drift and Ishandlwana.
The obverse of this medal has the profile of Queen Victoria and the reverse has a crouching African Lion infront of a protea shrub in the centre. SOUTH AFRICA is around the top half of the medal and below the Lion is a Zulu shield and 4 crossed spears or assegais. The ribbon is a standard width of 32mm and is a deep yellow or gold colour with a very dark blue stripes just in from either side, followed by a dark blue line to the central side of each stripe.
This medal can be awarded with clasps with various dates on them, 7 clasps were created - 1877, 1877-8, 1877-9, 1877-8-9, 1878, 1878-9, 1879. The clasps are silver in colour have the date awarded in the centre with a rosette underneath at either side of the clasp. The clasp needs to be attached to the medal with a metal pin.
