History
In October 1916 the British Government set up a committee responsible for creating a memorial plaque to be given to relatives of the fallen during the Great War, organising a competition for its design, which was won by sculptor and medallist Edward Carter Preston. The memorial, originally stamped only with the full name of the recipient, was a way for every man and woman, who made the ultimate sacrifice, to be recognised for their service, regardless of rank or position.
