Atlantic Star Miniature Medal

The Atlantic Star was awarded for service in home waters, the Atlantic, North Russian Convoys and the South Atlantic during World War II. 

The medal itself is a 6 pointed star with the Crowned Royal Cipher "GRI VI" in the centre, with an inscription of "THE ATLANTIC STAR" around the cipher. The reverse of the medal is blank as with all World War II stars. The miniature ribbon is a standard width of 16mm and is striped blue, white and green with the colours blending into each other, representing the Ocean.

There are 2 miniature bars that can be awarded and worn on the Atlantic Star, the 'Air Crew Europe' and 'France and Germany' bars. The bars represent the relevant WWII Stars and would have been awarded instead of these medals, meaning that the Atlantic Star medal would never be worn alongside the France and Germany Star or Air Crew Europe Star, as the relevant bar would be sewn to the ribbon of the Atlanic Star instead. Only one miniature bar can be worn on the medal ribbon, even if both were qualified for.  

Qualifying time for the medal is 6 months service afloat, in the Atlantic or in Home Waters, within the period 3rd September 1939 to 8th May 1945. Also awarded to aircrew who have taken part in operations against the enemy at sea within the qualifying areas for Naval personnel, subject to 2 months service in an operational unit. The star was immediately awarded to anyone who's service was cut short due to disability, wounding or death. To qualify for the Atlantic star individuals must have first qualified for the 1939-45 Star.

AWARD miniature medals complement the full-size official medals and are normally worn for formal dinner dress occasions.

All official medals are sent loose on the ribbon unless medal mounting is also purchased on the same order.
