1857-58 Indian Mutiny Medal
The Mutiny of India medal was awarded to Royal Navy, British Army and Indian Forces, as well as civilians who took part in supressing the Sepoy Mutiny. The mutiny at Sepoy did draw attention to the running of the Honourable East India Company and how they conducted affairs in India, which led to control being tranferred directly to the crown for the administration of India.
The obverse of this medal has the profile of Queen Victoria and the reverse shows the figure of Britannia besowing a laurel wreath beside a Lion. INDIA is written in capitals around the top of the medal and the dates '1857 - 1858' are at the bottom. The ribbon is a standard width of 32mm and is white with 2 equal red stripes, representing blood and bandages.
This medal can be awarded with clasps to indicate the specific battle the individual took part in, 5 clasps were created - Delhi, Defence of Lucknow, Relief of Lucknow, Lucknow and Central India. The maximum number of clasps awarded to 1 medal was 4. The clasps are silver in colour have the name of the battle in the centre, with fish-tail ends and a rosette underneath at either side of the clasp. The clasp needs to be attached to the medal with a metal pin.
