Armistice Day marks the agreement to end World War I and begin peace negotiations on the 11th of November 1918. To this day, this historical moment is commemorated with two minutes’ silence across the UK, at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month.

We now also recognise Remembrance Day on the second Sunday of November. This provides a physical opportunity for the public to pay their respects to the honourable people who served and gave their lives during World War I, and those who have served in later conflicts.

Whether you’re an active member of the armed forces, a veteran, a relation of a serviceman or a member of the public, there are many ways to pay homage and remember those who fought gallantly.

Ways to participate in Remembrance Day

Take a look at the suggestions below for how to commemorate Remembrance Day this year, whether it’s a quiet moment of reflection, purchasing Remembrance Day merchandise, or wearing a poppy.

Attend a Local Parade

Villages, towns and cities will often hold parades on Remembrance Day for the public to come together and pay their respects. Details of these events will usually be published by your local council. You can expect there to be a short parade, followed by a service ending with two minutes’ silence and the laying of wreaths to remember the fallen.

The National Service of Remembrance takes place at the Cenotaph in London. This service is attended by members of the Royal family, the Prime Minister, the Mayor of London and other officials.

Wear a Remembrance Day Poppy

In the lead-up to Remembrance Day, you are more than likely to see representatives and volunteers from the Royal British Legion encouraging people to support the Poppy Appeal. This initiative has been in place since 1921 and is a recognised symbol of Remembrance. Buying a poppy also helps fund essential services for our veterans. There is no “correct” way to wear a poppy, simply wear your pin with pride.

Support a Veterans Charity All Year Round

Although the Poppy Appeal is a great way to contribute to veteran charities, you could consider providing ongoing support if it is a cause that is close to your heart. Why not get in touch with other charities for the Armed Forces such as Help for Heroes or Combat Stress to see if you can volunteer or maybe provide a monthly donation?

Get Involved on Social Media

Many people will choose to pay their respects online, using the power of social media to share photos, messages and historical facts about the day. Why not share your kind thoughts with your connections, or join community groups to speak with others about this important event.

Set Up a Remembrance Space at Home

Sometimes, simply setting up a quiet space for reflection is the perfect way to remember those we have lost. Why not gather important possessions such as photographs of family members who have served, medals and other personal items and discuss moments and memories with loved ones? You could even read some wartime poetry, such as In The Flanders Fields.
