With all able-bodied men needed to fight with the country at war, the Womens’ Land Army, often referred to as “The Forgotten Army” recruited girls from all walks of life to provide labour to work on farms and other jobs on the land. By 1944 around 80,000 girls had volunteered or been conscripted, their role as vital to the war effort as any man fighting on the front line.
